As a career counselor, career guidance professional, HR professional and staffing executive who has hired or placed 1,300+ individuals, many professionals including myself are beginning to see signs of life in the economy resulting in open positions that will be filled.

Can you qualify?

Wait a minute, what about salary? What should be your response if you interview, and following the interview HR asks about your salary expectations? How do you respond?

Here are some scenario’s I recommend for every position:

First, ask the HR group to provide a salary range for the position prior to the interview. Also, research for a range. I’m not a huge fan of web-sites that provide salaries since every company has a different set of objectives. You might be surprised how cooperative HR will be. Remember, I’ve been in a HR role and speak from experience.

Next, match your background against the requirements. A total or close to a requirements-match of 100% normally means the company could offer you a salary at or slightly above the 50th percentile of the salary range.

This is the time and place to negotiate salary!

And you must ask about the complete salary package: Base, Bonus, Vacation, Personal Days, Holidays, “volunteer” days, club memberships, phone / car allowance, telework, flextime, career training, etc. Put benefit discussion as a second topic since benefit expense is normally an employee cost, but benefit discussion is very important.

For more direct questions concerning salary, I would recommend the following:

A) If you remained employed during the last several years, you can state your current salary. Remember, don’t fudge the number, employers will check, or, in some instances require evidence of pay.

B) If you were downsized in the past few months, use your the last salary paid. This could generate a potential quandary. Let me assist:

- If you are interviewing for a “senior” level job, that is manager, director or above, there should have been a salary range provided. There could be a “disconnect” because your previous salary could be higher or lower than what will be offered.

In general, if you have been out of work for several months, ask HR to provide a range and then you can make an assessment. The point is once a salary has been determined, and agreed, that’s it. That’s the salary you will use as your “start-point” for as long as you stay with the company.

If you provide a salary number, it may be too little or too much. It is really best to have the company go first.

Salary discussion may be the most difficult part of the interview. If you remain needing some discussion, please contact a career professional. This may be one of the most important steps you take.

There are plenty of good reasons you may want to become an EMT. If you are one of those individuals, you most likely have your own motives. However, if you’re trying to decide for certain whether you want to become an EMT, consider these reasons.

The primary legitimate reason is the ability to save other people’s lives. This is very important to many folks but not as important to other people, but it’s nevertheless something you should consider.

One other reason you ought to become an EMT is actually the job security. This motive just might make the decision for you simply because even though our economy is recovering from the ’08 crisis, there are still plenty of jobs being slashed by companies daily.

One final item you might want to take into account is the fact that you will learn a lifelong skill. I can explain this a little bit. If a friend or family member is ever in an emergency and needs treatment, you will know exactly what to do.

Perhaps you have realized, there’s a lot of good reasons to become an EMT, and there are rather a lot more than the ones stated previously. After you’ve had a little time to give it some thought, if you determine that you would like to become an EMT, pay a visit to this EMT training web site. It offers all of the info you will need to get started.

The grind of everyday is hard enough for most people. The majority of workers have to drive through daily traffic, rush into work, juggle a variety of tasks, deal with co-worker drama, come home, assist children, and then finally get to sleep. In addition to all of that many very often have to cope with manager problems. In fact only 49% of workers are satisfied with their boss. If you are experiencing some problematic situations with your superior here are some ways you can learn how to manage your boss and have a happier life.

Is your boss a micromanager?

If your boss is a micromanager, then there is an obvious trust issue that exists. The trust needs to be developed in the relationship. The best way to do this is first by asking for small projects you handle on your own. Then, submit unsolicited progress reports to your manager. This will let him know that you are on top of the project and are not procrastinating. If you need help or guidance, go to your boss and ask more questions. Don’t wait until he asks about your progress before asking for help. Slowly trust will build and your boss will start giving you more responsibility.

Is your boss a poor communicator?

Do you leave your boss’ office with a variety of questions about the project you’ve been given? Your boss may be making assumptions that you automatically know what is expected. She may also be very busy and may rush to give assignments without the necessary details. The best way to handle this problem is go back to your boss’ office with a pad and pen and ask some clarifying questions. Ask questions of your manager that will require her to give you detailed information. Lastly, request to know her expectations of the project when it is complete. More questions may arise as the project is in progress, don’t be afraid to ask for more details when needed.

Is your boss a poor delegator?

Sometimes managers will delegate projects one after the other without regard for time constraints. This is the time to remind your boss of the multiple projects you are already working on. Ask her to prioritize the projects for you in order of importance and deadline. If you prioritize the projects yourself you may make a mistake and not complete them in the correct order. This is your boss’ responsibility. Also, ask your manager if you can have assistance from a co-worker or possibly hire a temp to help you complete the work on time.

Does your boss neglect to train you?

When you’re given a new project, ask your boss to give you step by step instructions. If your boss doesn’t have time, ask if there is someone else you can shadow or ask for help. Also, tell your manager about your career goals and desire to promote within your company. Ask them to groom you so you will be considered when promotional opportunities come around.

Does your boss forget your achievements during performance evaluations?

This is a common complaint by employees. During performance evaluations, the manager may forget all the great things you did during the year. Let’s face it your boss is human too. All of us humans are more likely to remember the bad before the good. That’s why all your mistakes are on the review, but not your accomplishments. Keep a log of all your achievements during the year. Log all your overtime, and every time you volunteered for a project. Every time you help a co-worker, write it down. Take the log in with you to the evaluation. This will help your boss know what an asset you are to the company.

Does your boss have a bad attitude?

If your boss has a bad attitude toward you, figure out if he’s just responding to your attitude. Sometimes, we don’t see our own behavior. Your attitude may not be the most positive, and therefore your boss is responding in kind. Make sure your own attitude is bright, cheery, and positive. In addition, be diligent about coming to work on time and be timely when taking breaks. Be conscientious that your assignments are turned in on time and are free of mistakes. All of this should turn your boss’ attitude around. If he’s still cranky, remember that we can’t control anyone else only ourselves. So be happy, and don’t let anyone change that, not even your boss.

With very few exceptions, the single greatest commodity of any company is its’ people. Each and every person in a company is important to the overall success and therefore they must do their own part to attempt their best each and everyday. There are a few businesses that use proprietary rights or a unique technology to separate themselves from their competition. But, technology is quickly copied or becomes outdated and proprietary rights eventually run out. So, unless your company is constantly ahead of the technological curve, or the only one selling water in the desert, it must depend highly on employees to set itself apart in the market place. Hopefully, YOU are lifting your company towards success rather than dragging it down.

The following example shows how one unfocused employee can ruin the efforts of an entire team. A friend referred a new restaurant to my wife and I. The location was fantastic, the building beautifully remodeled and the interior perfectly decorated. As we entered, the atmosphere was warm and the aroma was heavenly. A hostess stood behind a podium with her back to us and a phone to her ear. She whirled around, hung up the phone, and with the warmth of a Siberian winter she frowned, rolled her eyes and barked, “Please tell me you have a reservation, because otherwise you are wasting our time.” For a second I thought it was a joke, so I smiled. I only received a cold long stare and a deep sigh in return. At that point, nothing else needed to be said. As quickly as we had entered, we were on to another restaurant. Even though we ended up waiting an hour, the new hostess was happy to see us and we felt welcome.

Now, it is possible that young lady is normally a warm and welcoming hostess. But, because of her presentation that night, she single-handedly ruined an opportunity for her entire company. I began to wonder if she would ever realize how much of an impact she had on us and how often that kind of behavior takes place in businesses around the globe. Although it is up to management and the individual, I thought a self-test might remind us how we should behave in the work place. As I did, simply answer the ten questions below honestly and determine if you are a Sensational Employee or if there is still some work to be done.

1.) Do you enjoy what you do? If you don’t, get out there and find a new position. Customers and Co-Workers are looking to interact with happy people who genuinely like their job. Attitude is a choice, so choose to have a good one. Remember, smiles are free.

2.) Do you behave professionally? There is a time and place for everything. Inappropriate language, web surfing, time-wasting and lack of courtesy are habits that hinder successful businesses. A professional isn’t about getting paid; it is how you present yourself.

3.) Can you take criticism? No one is perfect and we can all stand to improve. Listen and work on your deficiencies.

4.) Are you striving to do your very best? Never settle for average. Do everything in your power to put your best foot forward everyday, no matter what position you hold.

5.) Do you treat others like you want to be treated? The “Golden Rule” is suitable for all situations. If you want to get respect, you need to give it.

6.) Are you willing to learn new skills? Your adaptability and willingness to learn will give you varied experience and provide opportunities and security not afforded to others. Become a team player that can be counted on.

7.) Are you punctual? Arriving late is a sign of disrespect and shows a lack of planning on your part. Leaving early is just as bad.

8.) Do you take initiative? Don’t wait to be told what’s next, go ask what needs to be done or who needs help. Just sitting with nothing to do is a sign of laziness and will keep you from being promoted.

9.) Do you waste time whining? If you have a complaint, come up with a solution and present it to the proper person in a positive manner.

10.) Are you looking out for the company. You need to take care of the spoon that feeds you. It’s everyone’s job to watch the bottom line. Think and act like an owner. Who knows, maybe someday you will be.

Whether you think you would love to have a “dream job” working for someone else, or you would really be happiest owning a small business, you need to make sure it connects for you on all three of these areas. If not, you might just be trading the proverbial frying pan for a fire.

Your Passions

This is most often the one we overlook, and also the one we think cannot translate to earning a living. That’s another topic, but the question to ask yourself here is simple. What do you love to do? And by do, I don’t mean stare at dripping water or contemplate your navel. Once you’ve done those things long enough to get bored, then what? Read, write, garden, play with your dog, travel, exercise, drive, listen to music, debate politics? What do you love to do? Think of ten things you genuinely love to do and write them down. Don’t constrain yourself to any analysis. Just write them down. Now, are you doing any of those in your job, your dream job, or your own dream business idea?

Your Priorities

This can include things like time with your family, or charities you wish to support. It can also include how you want your life to look and what level of intensity you want to live. Your priorities might be to work at night, because when that is when you are most productive. Or, perhaps, you want summers off to travel or spend with the kids. Don’t confuse a priority with a passion. Wanting to work with “green” products is a passion. Choosing not to run the air-conditioner because you want to conserve electricity is a priority. Be sure to take into consideration how many hours a week you want to work (or how many weeks/year), and the degree to which you want control of your time. What are your priorities? Write them down too.

Your Profits

The triangle of success isn’t complete without the closing the final side of the equation. What kind of profit do you need, want, and expect to make? Where do you find people who will pay for what you know or offer? (You might be surprised at how varied this can be!) What is your bottom line? Are you dabbling at profitability, or going for it with all the gusto you have? Ask yourself, “Am I in this to survive or to thrive?”

You can create your own dream business! Get an idea, a plan, and get to work!

Let’s face it – internships are no longer a nice to have. These days, they are a must before you get out there to look for full-time work. And if you’ve found your way to any Internet job board, then you already know that growing companies are the place to find internships. Becoming an intern provides you with a lot of opportunities – the opportunity to learn, to get paid or receive credit, to learn new skills, network and make professional contacts. How do you ensure that you’ll find success during your internship? Here’s a list of the top-five things to keep in mind before your even walk through the door.

1. Your Boss is Busy: The reason why your boss hired you is because they are busy and need help. That means that any and every way that you can jump in and add value is yours for the taking and will likely be appreciated. So go ahead and get in there. Here’s an example: “Hi Cari, you mentioned you have a big meeting on Friday. Is there anything that I can research for you or help you prepare for the meeting?”

2. Interning Gives You a Chance to Learn: So yes, even though your boss is busy, you have an opportunity to soak up a ton of information. But, you need to ask questions if you want to really want to maximize your experience. Try this: “Hi Lauren, do you have five minutes? I’d love to hear your thinking behind making those changes to the website.”

3. An Internship Gives you a Chance to Shine: Yes, as an intern, you’re developing your skills, contacts and hopefully your bank account. But bare in mind, the give-and-take of an internship is very much a two-way street. You need to bring to the table just as much as you’re taking away. Don’t be afraid to chime in when you see opportunities or have practical strategies for moving the ball forward. “Jonah, have you heard of (fillintheblank)? It’s this great new website/product/application that I think could be really helpful to us. Do you want to set up some time for me to walk through it with you?”

4. An Internship May Be A Short Term Gig: A lot of times, college students and recent grads look for internships hoping that they’ll lead to a longer term position. And sometimes they do. Alternatively, for a variety of reasons well beyond your control, sometimes an internship is truly a short-term position. But that doesn’t mean it can’t have long term benefits. In addition to the skills you picked up, perhaps your boss will serve as a reference or make some valuable connections for you. “Hi Asher, thanks so much for the opportunity to intern for you. I understand that you don’t have a full-time position open right now, but I was hoping we could stay in touch. Perhaps down the line you’d be willing to serve as a professional reference for me or make a few introductions to people in the field?”

5. Or It May Have Long Term Potential: Business owners need good people. Period. And sometimes they’ll be open to ideas that are presented to them. So if you haven’t previously discussed ongoing employment, consider broaching the topic armed with a few potential work arrangements. “Leo, I know we haven’t talked about whether this position could develop into a full-time position, but I was hoping you’d consider it. I think I’d be very valuable to your team when it comes to X and Y, and if you’re open to it, have given some thoughts to what a more ongoing position might look like.”Keep these in mind as you travel along your internship path – we’re sure you’ll be pleased with the result

Changing a career can be a daunting prospect, especially if you have never done it before. The following steps will probably apply to those of you who are considering more dramatic change – but as a philosophy, these steps can be applied by anyone.

1.) The most important exercise you need to do is an honest assessment of what is actually stopping you from pursuing your dream career. This is the step where many people fumble. After all, if you saw no reasons for not changing your career when you wanted to, you would have done it a long time ago, right? What you need to do here is to think of all the reasons that are stopping you from any further action at the moment. List as many as possible.

2.) Find a moment when you feel relaxed and comfortable (warning: feeling stressed and overwhelmed will prevent this particular step working effectively for you) and go through your list. Cross out all the reasons that are downright ridiculous, e.g. “I keep this job because it has always been my grandmother´s dream to see me in this job” or “This job runs in the family, I have to stick to the tradition”, etc.
Once you have a list that is reasonable and contains only the reasons which you feel you truly can´t overcome, it is time to deal with those feelings.

3.) Decide which reasons are based purely on your beliefs; meaning there is no actual proof of their existence, you just believe that they are so. Good examples of such a belief would be: “I am not smart enough to have a job like that”, “I am too old to start a business”, “I am too young to have that promotion”, “I don´t have the right connections”, etc. And decide which reasons are actual facts, e.g. “I haven´t raised enough capital to invest in my business”, “I am missing one last accreditation to apply for that accounting job”, “I don´t speak the language that is a must for that particular job in the travel industry”, etc.

4.) Now you should have 2 groups of reasons. Those belonging to the “actual facts” group are easy to deal with. All you need to do is to set yourself a very precise action plan on how to get whatever qualification or circumstance you are missing to get the job of your dreams. When it comes to the group of “beliefs”, here some internal work is required.

5.) Take each belief and turn it around, to make a positive and empowering statement out of it, e.g. “I am totally smart and so fired up for that job!” Or “I am at a perfect age for that promotion because I am full of energy and can bring so much to that job”! Then you take those “turned around” statements and find proof in your past experience that they are actually true! When did you use your wit to come up with a fantastic, original and creative solution? When did you act so maturely for your age that you surprised your entire surroundings? The proof is there, you just have to find it, bring it out and use it as a motivational tool to keep you focused on the desired result, which is: stepping out bravely and confidently towards your new career.

Earlier most people who passed out of school or college looked for jobs in the medical or engineering filed. However, times have changed and the expanding needs of individuals have created innumerable job opportunities. Today, it is not difficult to find people who have lucrative careers in the field of oil and gas exploration, real estate development, stock and FOREX trading and many other fields. The main benefit of globalization is that it has given people choice to select the career they like. There are so many options out there and all options are so interesting that it is choosing the right career option has become difficult. In this article, I have discussed a few tips that will help you in choosing the right career.

Determining the right career option

There are several factors that you must consider before selecting a career option. Some of the important aspects that you must consider before selecting a career include your area of interest and your ability to perform.

Area of Interest

When you select a career, it is important that you choose a career that you find interesting. For example, you must avoid taking up a career in accounting if you are not interested in numbers. Only if you are interested in a particular field, will you be able to give your best. If you are stuck in a wrong job, you will be unhappy and may not be able to perform well.

Talent

Just having interest in a particular field will not ensure success. You must also have the required skills and talent to succeed in the career that you have chosen. You must also take steps to hone your skills and abilities to be successful in a career. You will be satisfied with your career only if you give your hundred percent. You can also take up an aptitude test to check if you have the skills and talent to take up a particular career.

Learning important details

If you have decided to take up a career, it is important that you get the required training and learn about all the possible short comings. For instance, if you want to be an actor, you must get the right training and must know how to deal with the people in the movie industry. Movie industry is a glamorous industry and there are many people who will take credit for your work. They will also try to demoralize you to prevent you from succeeding. Before you take up a career, it is a good idea to speak to a counselor or someone who is an expert in the field.

Internship

After you have decided on the career you would like to purse, it is important that you get an internship in your area of interest. Internship is important because it gives you an idea of the possible problems you will face and help you find the right solution for the problems.
